1. (2:28) now little children
    1. abide in Him
      1. (why?)
        1. so that when He appears
          1. we may have confidence
          2. and not shrink from Him in shame
    2. (2:29) If you know that He is righteous
      1. You may be sure that everyone who practices righteousness has been born of Him.
  2. (3:1) see what kind of love the father has given to us
    1. that we should be called children of God
      1. and so we are (loved by God and are called His children)
        1. the reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know Him.
    2. (3:2) Beloved, we are God's children now
      1. and what we will be has not yet appeared
        1. but we know that when He appears we shall be like Him
          1. (why?)
          2. because we shall see Him as He is
  3. (3:4) everyone who makes a practice of sinning
    1. also practices lawlessness
  4. (3:5) You know that He appeared to take away sin
    1. in Him there is no sin
      1. (3:6) No one who abides in Him keeps on sinning
      2. (3:6) no one who keeps on sinning has either
        1. seen
        2. or known him
  5. (3:7,8) Little Children, let no one deceive you.
    1. whoever practices righteousness
      1. is righteous
    2. whoever makes a practice of sinning
      1. is of the devil
        1. for the devil has been sinning from the beginning
    3. the reason the Son of God appeared was to destroy the works of the devil
  6. (3:9) No one born of God makes a practice of sinning
    1. for God's seed abides in him
      1. and he can not keep on sinning because he has been born of God.
  7. (3:10) by this is is evident
    1. who are the children of God
    2. and who are the children of the devil
  8. (3:11) For this is the message the you have heard from the beginning
  9. (3:13) Do not be surprised, brothers, that the world hates you
    1. (3:14) we know that we have passed out of death into life
      1. [why?]
        1. because we love the brothers.
          1. whoever does not love abides in death
  10. (3:15) everyone who hates his brother is a murderer
    1. and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him
  11. (3:16) By this we know love
    1. that he laid down His life for us
    2. and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.
      1. (3:17) But if anyone has the world's goods and sees his brother in need, yet closes his heart against him
        1. how does God's love abide in him?
