-
Normal Erythrocyte count
- Indicates no problem with erythropoiesis
- Implies that LD's symptoms are not
solely caused by a decrease in RBC's
- HOWEVER this does not rule out
RBC's as a contributory factor
-
Low Haemoglobin count
- Suggests an abnormality in the morphology of the RBC
-
Raised Leukocyte count
- Possibly due to a bacterial or parasitic infection
-
High lymphocyte count from differential
- This suggests an immune
response against 'foreign' material
- If these are T cells it would imply a
cell mediated immune response
- Examples of T cell
responses include various cancers
and the H5N1 strain of the bird flu virus
- However a B cell response
would indicate a humoral infection
-
Normal RBC count
BUT
low haemoglobin levels
- Microlytic anaemia
- As we did not test for T and B lympocytes
we cannot determine whether the high levels
were caused by a cell mediated or humoral infection.
