- Try any suggestions from your counselor 3 times at least
- Tweak contradictions you are offered to make them even more effective
- Direct your counselor if you know contradictions that are effective for you

-
Do's as counselor
-
Attitude of confident respect (and possibly, delight) in client
- 90% of good counseling
-
Help client set-up well
- Comfort, resting pose
- Start with what's going well
-
End by asking about attention and offering a question
-
Spell your last name backwards
- How does that sound when you say it?
- Count backwards from 81 in 3's
- What could you make out of the following 3 items?
- Look around and describe something delightful in your environment
- Name 3 rivers in your area
- Stay light & confident even when client goes heavy
-
Set limits according to your free attention
- Swap roles if restimulated
- Notice when Client is having feelings and invite them not to pass over these - keep going 'back there'
- Audibly appreciate your Client when they do discharge "that's good!" - "keep going"
-
Experiment!
-
Think
- What is the distress?
- In how many ways could I contradict that?
-
Try out your thinking
- Client agrees to try contradiction 3 times at least (can modify)
-
Encourage working early
- Did you ever feel like this before?
- What's an early time this reminds you of?
-
Don'ts as client
- Don't run away from feelings
- Don't client outside of sessions
-
Don't client on inappropriate material
- Ask if in doubt
-
Don'ts a counselor
- Do not 'take the microphone'
- Do not interpret or analyse
- Do not refer to client's material in or out of session without asking
- Don't follow up on your interests
-
Never say 'oh, something like that happened to me too'
- Ok to springboard for own sessions IF permission sought
- Don't worry about making mistakes!
