    1. Standard 1: Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for information and understanding.
      1. Objective: Students will use the English language for the purpose learning new information.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher will teach student how to gather information on various topics. Example: Students can look at pictures or watch videos in their native language and convey what they learned by drawing or writing simple sentences.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will use visuals and words around the classroom to help students identify different objects and items in the classroom. Example: With the teacher’s help, students can come up with a list of vocabulary for the items in the room or things they will need to learn new information. Important objects in the room can then be labeled or a list of the new words can be posted in the classroom.
    2. Standard 2: Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for literary response, enjoyment, and expression.
      1. Objective: Student will use the English language for the purpose of reading and creative expression.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher can group students together to share what they learned about a story. Example: Teacher can read a story to the class. Students can then be put into small groups to role-play different scenes. The levels and complexity of the scenes can depend on grade level and abilities. Teacher will guide students when creating a script.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will teach the writing process using visuals and examples to ensure understanding. Example: Students can be grouped according to writing level. The teacher will then work with a small group of students who are struggling and guide them through the writing process.
    3. Standard 3: Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for critical analysis and evaluation.
      1. Objective: Students will use the English language when analyzing and evaluating information.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teach students how to give feedback when reviewing someone’s work. Example: If students are at the beginning level, teacher can create checklist of different criteria and students can use the checklist to offer feedback. If students can write, then they should be encouraged to write their feedback. Teacher should focus on content. Grammatical errors can be addressed separately.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will teach students how to predict or make inferences. Example: Teacher can use pictures with a specific relatable scenario and then ask students to guess what will happen next. Students can respond orally or by writing depending on their level. Students can also predict and make inferences when listening to or reading a story.
    4. Standard 4: Students will listen, speak, read, and write in English for classroom and social interaction.
      1. Objective: Students will use the English language for the purpose of socializing in the classroom.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher will show examples of appropriate social interaction for the school and classroom. Example: The teacher can use visuals, video and role-playing to teach different social situations.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will give opportunities for group work and show students what it means to work together. Example: Rules for group work will be shared with students using visuals and simple sentences and will be posted in the classroom for easy access.
    5. Standard 5: Students will demonstrate cross-cultural knowledge and understanding.
      1. Objective: Students will use the English language to gain a better understanding of the cultural diversity around them.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher will encourage students to share information about their countries and cultures. Example: Allow ELL students the option to show pictures or a video to share information on their cultural background. If students are at a level where they can verbally explain a picture then the teacher can include that as expectation for the assignment.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will teach students about multiculturalism and diversity in the classroom. Example: Students can talk about a favorite holiday and share information about that holiday with the class. Depending on the level, students can use either objects, diagrams or videos to teach others about their favorite holiday.
  4. TESOL Standards Grades 3-5
    1. Standard 1: English language learners communicate for social, intercultural, and instructional purposes within the school setting.
      1. Objective: Students will be able to use the English language to social and follow instructions in the classroom.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher explicitly teaches the instructions for an assignment or a project. Example: Create a list of new vocabulary and show samples of what the end result should look like.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher teaches school and classroom rules using visuals, charts or graphs. Example: A visual should accompany each written rule.
          3. Teaching strategy 3: Teacher groups students according to language level and encourages them to share a personal story with one another. Example: Have student work with a partner of the same level to talk about their favorite movie. Teacher can offer a conversation guide to ensure that students are communicating.
    2. Standard 2: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of language arts.
      1. Objective: Students will be able to understand and apply the different concepts of the English language such as grammar, comprehension and reading and writing.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher will teach the different genres and give examples using visuals and simple sentences. Example: Use video to show what each genre looks like.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will teach grammar concepts by using centers for different levels. Example: Students who are at L1 and L2 can be grouped together at one station and students at L3, L4 and L5 will each have their own station.
          3. Teaching strategy 3: Teacher will differentiate the reading and writing workshop based on each student’s level. Example: Students will read a story based on their reading level. Their writing will be assessed using a differentiated rubric that is appropriate to their level.
    3. Standard 3: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of mathematics.
      1. Objective: Students will able to understand math vocabulary used in instructions and world problems.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher will create a vocabulary list of the math vocabulary, using simple words and visuals when appropriate. Example: This list can be posted in the classroom or shared with ELL students only.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will teach students strategies for problem solving. Example: Students will be shown how to break down a question to make it simple to understand. They can use graphs, tables or visuals to better understand the problem.
          3. Teaching strategy 3: Teacher will design questions and prompts for different proficiency levels to ensure ELL student involvement. Example: Using yes or no or short-answer questions.
    4. Standard 4: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of science.
      1. Objective: Students will be able to understand and use new science vocabulary that is part of assignments, projects and experiments.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher will use visuals to explain new science concepts. Example: Use graphic organizers, charts and figures.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will use experiments to teach a science concept. Example: Experiments can be done by the teacher for all students to see. For simple experiments, students can work with a partner and learn the science concept hands on.
          3. Teaching strategy 3: Teacher will create a vocabulary list of the science vocabulary using simple words and visuals when appropriate. Example: This list can be posted in the classroom or shared with ELL students only.
    5. Standard 5: English language learners communicate information, ideas, and concepts necessary for academic success in the area of social studies.
      1. Objective: Students will be able to understand use the English language in the social studies context.
        1. Teaching Strategies
          1. Teaching strategy 1: Teacher teaches new vocabulary before starting each lesson. Example: A list of basic and sophisticated vocabulary should be taught. The list can be something posted in the classroom or handed out to each student.
          2. Teaching strategy 2: Teacher will use visuals to teach historical events. Example: Students will create timelines either independently or in a group to help them better understand when historical events occurred.
          3. Teaching strategy 3: Teacher will use classroom diversity as an opportunity to teach about countries and cultures. Example: Allow ELL students the option to show pictures or a video to share information on their cultural background. If students are at a level where they can verbally explain a picture then the teacher can include that as expectation for the assignment.
