World War 1
-
1914 Nations of Europe went to war
-
governments fluorished, patriotism bloomed
- US was not yet in the war
-
Ten million died on battlefield
- 20 million died of hunger and disease
-
Killings happened very fast
-
Large scale too
- British army almost entirely wiped out in first 3 months of war
- But British not told of how horrible the deaths were
- That summer, British general ordered troops to move toward German lines
- 20,000 Killed
- Huge number of casualties
-
President Woodrow Wilson
-
Originally promised to stay neutral in the war
-
1917 Germans had announced they would have submarines sink any ship bringing supplies to the enemy
- British Lusitania was torpedoed and sunk by a German submarine
- Included deaths of Americans
-
1914 serious recession in the US
-
Prices deflated, unemployment
-
prosperity now depended on foreign markets
-
WW1 England becomes a market for American goods and loans
- JP Morgan loans
- When US entered the war rich took even more direct charge of the economy
- This seems to always be the case
-
Imperialism
-
Du Bois saw the war of this to conquer lands for their materials like gold and diamonds, rubber, ivory, etc.
-
The new wealth will come from "darker" nations
-
These nations are Asia, Africa, South and Central America, West Indies, islands of South Sea
- Ingenuity of capitalism
- Safety valve for explosive class conflict
-
American capitalism
-
Needed international rivalry
-
periodic war
- creates artificial community of interest between rich and poor
-
Draft
-
Congress voted overwhelmingly for a draft
-
Needed many people to fight in the war
-
Day after Congress declared war socialist party met and declared "crime against people of the US"
- In a way I agree because there was no real support for the war
- Lots of propaganda
-
Socialists
-
Gaining ground
-
Election in 1917- candidate for mayor of NY got 22% of the vote
-
American Alliance for Labor and Democracy aim to unify sentiment in the nation
- Shows dissatisfaction in the nation
-
Espionage Act
-
Passed in 1917
-
Provided penalties up to 20 years in prison for those who attempt to destroy, be disloyal, refuse military of navy duties
-
Not clear how this act would be used
- Really used to imprison Americans who spoke out against the war
- Ever hear of the 1st amendment?
- I was shocked to read that it's still legislation but only in times of war
- Charles Schenck arrested in Philly for printing and distributing 15 ,000 pamphlets that denounced draft law and war
- Said how this is unconstitutional
- Indicted anyway and found guilty
- Debs also arrested for violating
- Seems just use it to shut people up
- His appeal was slowly processed
- About 900 went to jail under this senseless act
- It could be a good act if it didnt follow ulterior motives
-
American Protective League
-
Claimed to have found 3 million cases of disloyalty
-
States organized vigilante groups
-
Example
- Minnesota Commission of Public safety
- Closed saloons and moving picture theaters
-
Post office began taking away mailing privileges of newspapers and magazines that printed antiwar article
- Seems like they're going too far
-
Antiwar
-
Few in Congress spoke against the war
-
Socialist Katie Richards O'Hare
-
Said that women were there only to create and raise babies
- Arrested, tried, found guilty
-
War gave government opportunity to out IWW
-
Jury finds them all guilty
-
Can't be illegal to have differing opinion
- That is not what our country was built on
-
1918
-
War ended
-
50,000 American soldiers had died
-
Wartime jailings, intimidation, national unity, but still fear of socialism
- Deportation of Aliens
- Rounded up and deported
- In Boston, 600 arrested in home raids, etc.
- Was this really going on?
