We’ve shared tips and benefits of mind mapping in workplace, and in no doubt it works just as well in schools.
Frank Stahl is a psychologist and life coach, knighted in Spain for his achievements. Dr. Stahl has helped hundreds of patients improve their life, and specializes in training both adult and child with ADHD.
Dr. Stahl thinks that mind mapping is a crucial part of not only planning life and goals, but also in understanding. For ADHD’ers, mind mapping is even more important, it enables them to flush all their ideas into a concise road map that they can use to stay focused.

Mind mapping is helpful to ADHD’ers especially in below 4 ways:
- **Encourage Creativity ** People with ADHD are often creative thinkers with a lot of energy, thus mind map in one way encourages their creativity by inviting a free flow of ideas, in another way helps them tame down their "unfocusness".
Dr. Stahl takes History class as an example:
Students can brainstorm anything related to History that comes into their mind, which quickly harnesses their creativity. And by writing/drawing those thoughts down around the central topic captures their attention.
- Working from the General to the Specific When one student is inspired and popped up "people who fought each other", then this branch can be elaborated further into details. Students can see how one idea is related to the other, which greatly helps them to stay focused on the topic.
- Help Memorizing (by using colors, pictures, notes, arrows etc.) ADHD’ers tend to be visual learners and visual learner remembers 75% of what they read or see. They can understand information best when they SEE it, thus diagrams, charts, maps work well for them.*
Using color to highlight main ideas helps to clarify thoughts and memorizing as well.
- Easy Access for Edit & Revision
When the lecture is over, students basically have put all the information in the mind map. It’s organized, understandable and moreover, visually memorable for ADHD students.
If anything related to that certain topic, students can always go back to the mind map adding more details, which helps turn studying into a habit. Revision becomes easier with these handy mind maps, allowing them to access lots of information in just one glance.
"It was something that I could do what I needed to do, in a way that I wanted to do."
Quoted from Dr. Stahl, and he sincerely hopes that teachers, parents and students can try and experiment with mind maps so that they can learn things in a way they can enjoy it!
